Low temperatures along with rain, snow and ice will affect even the toughest driveways, paths and patios. Check out our tips below on how to prepare for the cold weather ahead:

Clean your paving slabs

The first thing you’ll need to do is start by cleaning your paving and driveway. Remove any debris, including weeds! Whilst they may not do well in the cold weather, it’s best to remove weeds to keep your driveway in good condition. This also gives you chance you to check for any damage that may have occurred during summer. For example, spilt liquids. Make sure you use the right equipment when cleaning to ensure you don’t do any surface damage or loosen materials.

Check for damage

Now that you have a clean driveway and paving, it’s time to check for damage. This includes any cracks or gaps. These will need to be filled as winter weather conditions will only worsen them.

Safety

Driveways, patios and paving can become extremely dangerous when slippery. This can be caused by a build-up of ice, hidden by fresh snowfall. Sloping drives can be particularly difficult.

Whilst the best de-icing methods are controversial, make sure you’re using something granular for your safety. Sand is an excellent option. De-icing salts are easily available. However, some contain ammonium sulphates and nitrates. This can have a negative effect on concrete. Make sure you do your research! Sand won’t cause any damage to your block paving or outdoor plants.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
